Still working out some details in the construction of a 7′ x 7′ bathroom in a basement remodel.
I’ve got a couple of preexisting conditions (furnace location and vent stack) that limit how and where I can move things.
I’m thinking now of maybe doing a corner shower, rather than a 3′ x 4′ shower.
The shower will be tiled, walls and floor.
2 questions:
-If I build the pan myself are there drawbacks to making the shower custom sized, as long as I frame it out for the appropriate shower door?
-Has anyone used any prefab shower stall pans that are meant to be tiled over?
I’m trying to figure out the pros and cons without having installed one myself before.

A preformed plastic shower pan isn't intended to be tiled. (The flex and slipperiness of the surface prohibit tile adhesion). There is a system by Kerdi that uses preformed styrofoam that is covered with waterproofing material and tiled. Check out the Schluter website to see examples. If you're going to do a custom pan just be sure not tear the corrolay and if you haven't floated a pan before, use the "goof proof shower pan" that helps a novice perfect the slope to the drain.
Hope this helps.
