Hey, tile experts…..
I’m refurbishing our 50’s (pink) bathroom tile floor. A couple of the small mosaic tile pieces have popped out during a particularly vigorous cleaning session (oops!).
I’m thinking glue is NOT the answer. But is thinset the answer? Mastic? GE silicon calk :)? What?
Thanks.

you can use some small dabs of construction adhesive if ya want...or thinset...either or...or mastic...or spit n chewing gum...the list is endless : )

const adhesive sometimes works even better than the thinset or mastic.
for a repair that's gonna see some foot traffic I like quick set thinset.

I have found that silicone works pretty well--get all the loose thinset out first and make sure the tile sits even with the rest. I haven't tried Lexel or Geocel, but those might be even better than silicone.
I would use 15 minute clear epoxy.
Problem with thinset is it will add thickness under the tile, so it won't lay flush. Also, something that thin would dry before it has a chance to set.

scrap the old thinset down to the subfloor/backer.
I have an old chisel that's ground down to practically round that makes quick dust of old thinset. For smaller tiles, scrap with a utility knife ... back of the blade works great.
or a big flat head screw driver.
once you break it open ... it's a small pile of dust in a matter of minutes.
just gotta be careful and don't let any of the tools slip so you don't chip any good tile edges.

Those tiles aren't applied with thinset, they're directly on the 2 - 3 inch thick dryset bed. For modern tiles I'd go with your method, and quick setting thinset. I've repaired at least 30 of these old porcelain tile floors and have found the epoxy works best. Just dry fit the tiles first, mix up a small batch of epoxy and I'm done in minutes. ~ Ted W ~
