I am making picture shelves for DW. Using maple since I have a small block left from the tables I am making her.
She wants them painted to match the trim. There will be some nice painted shelves, huh?
What primer is good for this? I usually use BM Fresh Start on pine, but will it be good with maple? Or would something like Kilz be better?
I would rather stick with latex, but I guess I have to be willing to bend.
Thanks.

Hey Glenn,
I think the Fresh Start is the primer to use. I've had very good results with it on a variety of woods. Just be aware that since it's water-based, it will raise the grain a bit. Just give it a light sanding after it's fully dry and you should be good to go.
Oil-based primers are definitely the primer of choice for exterior use because they adhere so well. That isn't an issue for interior shelves. Oil-based primers also block the natural oils in wood from bleeding through, so if you were making them out of cedar, I would say, yes, the Kilz is a good idea. For maple, you'll be fine with latex.
Thanks Don. I grew impatient- I always post my problem as I am ready to attack. Piss Poor Planning.I used the Fresh Start because my usual paint store told me that it is good for wood. Just wasn't sure about maple. Thanks again. How's the biking? I've been trying to work out a bit, but I have no consistency or discipline. And I haven't gotten on the bike yet.Glenn
don't know which primer would be best ...
but U did strike a chord.
coupla years ago ... I remembering making the drive out to pick up some nice maple. Bought it, even though it was a change order I wasn't gonna charge for ... as I just wanted done and out.
bought it, trimmed it, routed it ... ran it as door trim.
even had the customer pick out the specific stain / finish he wanted ...
got there the morning my painter was to finish it ...
and saw him standing ther painting it!
customer changed their mind back ... decided paint "was" better ....
decided they liked the look of the painted trim I'd already installed, removed and replaced with that nice maple!
