I want to install a hardwood floor over an old, uneven, unlevel concrete floor. If I were to level the floor, I would need to add about three inches to the lowest areas. If I were to simply make the floor even (a slightly tilted plane), that three inches would be cut in half. The floor is roughly 20′ X 50′.
What materials and techniques should I use to make a flat surface for attaching the plywood subfloor?

Use a self leveling product like gypcrete or the many others like Mapei's floor levellers and once dry, cover with an engineered, floating wood floor instead.
Faster, cheaper and better.

Thanks! I will see what I can find out about gypcrete and Mapei products. I am a homeowner learning about renovation as I go. I just discovered this forum. Lots of questions to come! I appreciate your time.
