I am preparing to build a new home and wondered if there is a general rule of thumb for estimating cost of capping the foundation?

Hi Karen,
You're not off to a running start with this house building plan of yours.
What exactly are you going to cap this foundation with?
Gabe
*KarenWhat exactly do you mean "cap the foundation"? Are you talking about a concrete block foundation wall? Are you going to put in a crawl space or a slab flooring? Need more info.Vince

Apparently terminology is different here. I was looking for an estimate of cost(per square foot) on average, to establish first
floor on 8'concrete cellar hole. Thanks for any help to this rookie.

Hi Karen,
I believe that you're looking for an average cost per sq. ft. to build a first floor, comprising of floor joist and subfloor only, after the foundation has been poured.
You should tell us what part of the world you're in, so that we can have a clue and then we might be able to give you better answers.

*Karen:Take your plans to the building supplier you're going to use and ask one of the sales reps to do you a quote. Most quotes are only good for 30 days since lumber is a commodity and pricing fluctuates (sometimes wildly)but this should get you a ballpark #.Don't forget sales tax and allowance for waste and overages (I allow 5-10% for unknowns, depending on size of house, confidence in sales rep, etc.).That's a new one for me. Never heard a floor system referred to as a foundation cap, but I guess it makes sense.

Gabe,
In speaking of capping the foundation I was referring to first floor, joists and subfloor. Tedd Benson in his book The Timber Frame Home and others here in New England readily use the term capping the foundation.
