We are planning to build a Custom Home on land that we already own in the Houston,TX area.
I have seen many different “per square foot” cost estimates for new construction published. What is a number that we can budget for that will be accurate? The construction type will be stick frame on pier and beam.

Good Morning Brian,
You would have better luck finding the fountain of youth.
A custom house can cost from a low of 100 dollars a square foot up to 350 plus a square foot. We can design you a kitchen that will eat your entire budget in one sitting.
The first step is to find a floor plan that works for you and your family's lifestyle.
The next step is to agree on basic components. (brick, stone, wood siding, hardwood floors etc.)
Then you go around and get 3 quotes on what "you" have decided on.
If it's inside your budget and you want to add to the components, you make a list of priorities and slowly add them into the plans. (custom kitchen, grand staircase, workshop, home theatre, theme rooms, sauna, whirlpool, indoor swimming pool, bowling alley, ball room etc.)
Get the picture?
I've been in the construction biz for 35 years and I can tell you their is no such thing as an accurate cost per square foot on custom homes.

*Have to agreed with Gabe. When I'm asked about how much I charge to build a house,my standard reply is $10,000 per sq. ft. I have found it easier to start high and work down to a budget then to start low and add up. Haven't done one of the $10,000 ones yet........ but one day who knows?
*Brian, I also agree with Gabe. This was talked about back in Feb.(check the archives).I posted this message; why don't we buy cars buy the pound wouldn't that make about as much sense? All of these are base price no options. ........CAR...........Weight....MRSP.....$PER LB. Daewoo Lanos SE .......2447....10,600...4.331834 VW Beetle GLS..........2778....17,900...6.443484 Chev.
