I`m tring to put hickory as a selfedge on a formica counter top?. And my question is how do you put it on without using a nailgun- by getting it flush to the top surface of the formica. The hickory is 1.5 x 3/4 x? and it has a bullnose on the top surface

Take it easy, things take time.
You could spline it for registration and connection.
You could glue it on and clamp it.
Or, you could put it on first, then laminate over the top of it. Rout your shape, cutting the laminate at the same time. My preferred method.
Take it slow routing an edge on hickory. Cutting the entire profile in one pass seems to introduce that shattering splintering noise.

Generally, you attach the wood to the substrate, if necessary plane it flush, then apply the laminate. Trimming the laminate also trims the wood.

Use a Kreg jig and pocket screw the banding to the countertop substrate from underneath. This won't work so well if the countertop is already on the cabs. If that is the case, try maybe coupling yellow glue with one of the fast-grabbing glues, like fastcap's 2p-10 glue. Or glue and edge clamps. Or glue and c-clamps and then wedges in between the throat of the clamp and the banding. You can do it!
