Has anyone ever had electrical wave current from a nearby microwave tower, charge the boom of your crane, shunting it down?

No! Microwwave towers don't put out the needed power to burn electronics.. In additon The LMI system is down in the cab with simple load swiches etc. up in the boom.
Why is it necessary to ground the crane?
so it doesn't float away ?;)

Grounding is not normally needed unless the boom gets within close proximity of the tower or has the potential to get within close proximity..
I've packed away all of my OSHA guildlines and don't recall the exact distances involved. In general if you use the same proximity rules that apply to high tension power lines you should be reasonably close to safe..
