Want to put in eating area with built-in bench and 3 or 4 windows on southwestern wall with about ten or eleven feet to play with. New construction and currently just framed. Rather than purchase a bow or bay window package, would like to make it custom with large sill for resting cups and potted plants and put in 3 or 4 Anderson double hung or casement windows.
Have searched but cannot seem to come up with a real doable plan. An old Handyman mag gives some good how-to instructions but incorporates premade bay window pkg with copper slant roof and bottom, which looks terrific.
How close can we come to getting that look but using regular windows, a custom roof with shingles matching house roof? How difficult is it to bump out this size area & wind up with a weatherproof, snug & attractive extension to what is already a unique kitchen?
Just steer me in the proper direction if you’d rather not try to explain the details. As always, thanks for your time and input. and HAPPY 2008!

I'm imagining you want to cantilever this structure off the existing exterior wall, 3 -6'? Which way do the existing floor joists run - are they parallel or perpendicular to the outside wall? Do you have access underneath the kitchen floor? Could you support this new structure from the ground instead
As a real, degreed engineer, I've always wanted to try a "suspended" bay, where the bay is supported by diagonal cabling hidden in each side wall, connected to the existing house ceiling plane, which is beefed to act as a shear diaphram.
Sounds like a nice addition to the living space that you'd really use - I'd go for it!

oists run perpendicular to this wall. Versalam carrying beam to right of area spanning entire width of 20' room. Short wall (more reinforcement) will separate banquette eating area from cellar stairs.Daylight basement entry directly below. Access very good, Interior area wide open. The "bay" area will contain only a nice shelf behind the banquette, which fits on current floor plan. So the "bumped out" section will hold only the windows and maybe an 18" shelf acting as an extended window sill, so to speak. Here is initial drawing. The bay window will replace standard DH windows in drawing. This is an informal blueprint - dimensions are off somewhat. Believe 6' slider can be centered beneath, so bay extension will act as a mini porch roof for entrance.MOTTO: First Do No Harm
A bay window is just that and can be designed and installed as sel-supporting in a wall, but usually leaves the wall in place with no floor extension for the seating you envision.
A bay with windows is a complete bump-out - floor, walls, windows, roof, so you can use the floor space in it. It can take some specifi engineering planning.
One way to do this, as I remember your house, is to dig in two piers at the vector points to support it.

Hey Mainer,
What am I doing wrong? Tried to attach drawing of addition to my Cape showing where bay windows would go and form showed attachment made (twice!) but when I click on it, the whole page goes white.
Any ideas? Thanks, the puppy in a smart dog world
Both copies show up fine for me.That would be an easy location to build a bay. The two outer large angles are where you would set posts to support it, possibly in line with the post nearest on that porch landing.

I guess the only problem is that you would need to slide that entry door down some to give you enough room. I'd need the floorplan to know

What do you mean by sliding the entry door down in order to get enuff room? Are you talking about the basement slider? How would the floor plan help? Why do you think only two of you have replied? Do I need to go about this another way? Is it so unusual to incorporate a banquette area with windows. Or is it difficult? Thanks for your help
I mean the swing door showing on the landing of the porch in the drawing. As to why few have responded, I can't say. Maybe you didn't set out enough cookies and milk. Maybe you should post while wearing your teddy. Darned if I know. Maybe they all figured, Pif is already on this one, too easy to bother with...

Well, you got me there, friend. I don't know what in heck I sent you but I don't have a door on that level on that side of the house. Beneath will be a 6 foot slider. This much I'm kinda figgering - to go with standard windows of most appropriate height and trim them out right, instead of buying a prefab bay window. So that's a relief. Just wish I'd run across a few who've done it with great success - the whole works, roof, support beneath, built in shelf and banquette.Oh, my condolences. Just saw in another post you bunged up a toe. Must be miserable in cold icy conditions unless you can avoid wearing boots this winter in ME. Hope you're better soon.By the way, I think a niche over in the corner of a kitchen away from stove, sink, DW, fridge, is about the neatest thing, esp. when it's large enuff for 3 or 4 folks to snack around. I also have a center island planned with stools. You can imagine the kitchen is the hub of my home. I can't wait to get back and get this all underway. Thanks for your time and input.
Attached is a screenshot of what you sent. I traced green rectangle over the area where I understand a bay would be placed and a red circle around the door I suggested might need to be moved to make the bay large enough.

U have 2B one patient dude. I just went thru my files once it dawned on me I'd sent you a pix from an idea that wouldn't work. You must have thought I was nuts.I dislike stairs and outside access to Kitchen this way was impractical to say the least. The one thing that bothers me about my house is there is NO door directly into kitchen from sensible level, but the place is small enuff coming in off the porch pretty much gets you to a spot to pile the groceries.I'll try sending the update, just 4 kicks. (Man, no wonder nobody checks out my posts.) UR a good guy, Mr. Pif.
well, yeah, I was wondering 'bout cha...
Anyways, replacing that bank of three windows is where the bay with three walls would bump out. You would want a couple posts like what had been drawn in that other PDF for the porch support...

I thought LOL meant lots of luck.Hey I don't care if you get some amusement at my expense, if you'll be serious when I am.Just reviewed a Martha Stewart show where a guy in coastal Maine (10 acres! What did that cost?) who is boatbuilder & designed a bathtub after a lobster boat. Really nifty. Anyone hear of him?No, no, I won't be a customer. I'll be lucky to get a petroleum product tub at the rate I'm going. bye, guys
LOL, you are a good sport! Piffin is your guy! He is funny looking though..... LOL

perhaps your browser is set to show the PDF at larger scale and mine automaticly resizes to fit screen. You might be looking at a white corner of the page and need to scroll around or size it down to about 75%
