Here in North Carolina, the worst drought on record has me installing rain barrels on my house. Due to stringent water-use regulations, these are the only way that I’ll be able to water vegetable plants, and the few flowers that we’ll be able to have.
I want to add rain barrels to the front of my house as well as the back, but I’m concerned about the aesthetics.
I’m looking for ideas — can you think of a large container (60 or more gallons) that would look more like a garden sculpture?
Or, how might I otherwise disguise a large container?
I’m looking for ideas other than a short length of fencing.
Thanks in advance.

Dig a hole. Put the barrel/tank/what-have-you in the hole. Voila -- a cistern.

Know something strange?
A week ago, I was dring thru the state on I-95 and noticed that all the rest stops, the urinals auto-flush with so much water ( seemed likea good five gallons) that I was standing back to avoid splashover while zipping up and thinking, "Man, the drought must be over if they can afford to use water like this!"

It's not that the rest stops think the drought is over -- it's just one of the many ways that we fool northerners. For instance, if you were through here last week, you were probably enjoying temperatures in the 70's. In early February.

What great pics :-) Another great way to hide a barrel is to plant creeping fig at its base. It will grow up & cling to the sides & soon it will be covered & look just like a hedge plantBobbi
Guy with a pair of greenhouses hired me to excavate for a 1500 gallon septic tank, to be filled with roof runoff. Stuck in a submersible pump and he was ready to go if his well had problems.

I think the containers that are flat on the back side look better, if you stay above ground. I like the inground idea, except that you probably have to have electricity and a pump. Or at least a hand pump. That might look cool, and old hand pump in the garden.
I've always thought that the old whiskey/wine barrels can be very attractive. Just my opinion though.

Some folks paint them. Just a matter of finding a design/pattern you like, I guess. LOL, or maybe you can color match it to you siding and have it blend in. Or maybe make it look like a big flower pot.
