Hello (again) everyone…was a regular member for a while, but have been away for quite a while…not sure why, just onna dem things.
OK, so…to the point…
I am designing a small screened in porch over an existing deck. Looking at the house, there is a dormer, not quite centered on the deck, and thereby, the new gable roof.
There is a window in the middle of the dormer. At first look, I told the owners it looked like we may be able to miss the window with the new (gable) roof, but would have to do some measuring, drawing etc. but that I HAD to have at least a 3/12 pitch. If I can’t get a 3/12 pitch and miss the corner of the window, I told them, I’ll have to build a cricket in front of it.
I don’t miss the window with a 3/12.
“What’s a cricket?” they say…
So I attempt to explain it, as well as I could when the owner gets his iPad out and looks up “images for roof cricket”.
Nothing…and I look like an idiot. The pictures he pulled up is what I normally call a saddle (behind a chimney, for example), though I have heard those called crickets as well.
I have only had to build a (insert correct term here) two times. Once as a helper about 17 years ago and only one other since, so once we decide on the correct term, I will probably have some “refresher” questions regarding the framing of one of these.
BTW…a 2/12 would work, but I’m not doing it (Cincinnati-area).
Peak to gutter is 10′. A 3/12 gets me up about, well, 10″ of course, into the window.
I’d sure appreciate any help on the term…or any other solution to this issue you all may have.
I tried to explain it as best I could…please let me know if you need any clarification.
Thanks so much

To me a "cricket" is either
To me a "cricket" is either the thing behind a chimney or an insect named Jiminy. But building terminology varies a lot from region to region.
If I understand correctly, you need to make a cut out in the roof around a window? We call that a "window well".
Good lord am I really that stupid?
Still no good pictures of one, but, man do I feel dumb. Been calling it a cricket all this time.
I sketched a picture of it for them on 3D software and they were happy with it. Waiting for plan to get through and starting in a couple weeks.
Cricket
