I have a question regarding installing crown on top of a cabinet/bookcase. These built-ins will be visible from a walkway on the second floor. If I install the crown as I would for kitchen cabinets (where the crown does not touch the ceiling) then the back of the crown will be easily visible from above creating a ‘bowl’ effect. Doesn’t sound like a major problem but I’m wondering if there is a standard practice for building a false top on the bookcases so the tops will be flush.
Let me know if you have feelings one way or the other.
Thanks

Stain or paint the back side of the crown and add fake plants on top. They'll just love it! ;-)
I used to deliver for a furniture company. It wasn't uncommon to have an extra sheet of ply on top of large bookcases and armoires. It would be just a 1/4" down from the top of the crown and stained to match the piece. It was incorporated into the back of the crown and looked seamless. It may be a pricey option, especially with a long length of cabinets, but it looked great.

if it's visable .... gotta be finished. Plain and simple.
not to hard to block it up and cut a sheet of finish ply with angled edges to fit in there nice and tight.

Absolutely finish it off. Block it out and a piece of 1/4" ply. That is exactly the type of thing that people notice and you will get a rep for being a good finish carp.
Be sure to bevel the edges of the ply for a tight fit to the crown.
Assuming that nothing will be stored on top, foam board might even be easier than plywood. If you size it right, it probably doesn't even have to be attached. Just drop it in.
Depending on the size of the cabinets, you might need a few spacers to keep it from sagging.

Just drop it in.
same with the plywood.

What Jeff Buck says!
I do this on all my cabinets, the people love it, they put all there crap up there and see that they don't have to use there extra phone books to shim it up even with the crown, they think I'm brilliant, which of course is true!

Excellent. The crowd has spoken. These are two small bookcases so putting a piece on top is no problem. I just wanted to see how everyone handled this scenario.
Thank you for all the replies.
"they think I'm brilliant, which of course is true!"
it's nice to work with rational thinking people, huh!

3/4" plywood!
What if someone displays their antique anvil collection up there, or something else weighing more than a couple of pounds? 1/4" will sag, the edges will open up. Use 3/4" and block it up on all four sides. Make it rock solid or don't make it at all is what I say. --------------------------------------------------------
