I am new to this site and so far I love it!
I would like to tap the knowledge of some of the trim carpenters out there. I am installing a standard 5 1/4″ crown molding on a ceiling, that part is no problem. The problem is that part of the ceiling is level and part is sloped as in a vaulted ceiling. The miter in the corner is going to be difficult, any tips?

calculate the diferential and get the same profile in another size to match or make a two step joint or ue inside corner butt blocks

I don't think a miter will work in this scenario.
I would run the level sides of the room with a short, level mitered piece on to the adjoining walls. Apply a 'drip cap' over the short sections, and then run the gable wall down on top of the cap. It will resemble the rake and returns on the exterior of a gable.
You can tackle this job by using either pendants or miter transitions. Thanks for Gary Katz for these pages.

You beat me to it.
Thanks very much, that was a great help.
You will need to make a transition piece like this example from Gary Katz:

Gary's site has great examples. For finish carps his site is a must see. Gary is also a moderator over at the JLC finish forum.
