Looking down the road a couple of weeks I’ll be putting up a
4 1/2″ crown mold in the living room. The thing is that at one end of the room is a stair-well opening to the second floor. Trying to get my head around how to return the molding at the opening in the ceiling…. Haven’t run into this before….thinking the simplest is to return the crown 90 degrees to the wall and end at the opening, OR what about running it into a block or a bracket…Or would it look better returned 90 degrees to the ceiling? Any suggestions folks?
Thanks again, Jeff

Usually I would 90 return to the wall, seemed it ended nicely, gave a good look at the profile of the crown. I read here or somewhere a 45 then another 45 to the wall..........sort of sweeping back to the end pt. Oddly, haven't had a crown return to deal with since. You're going to do it anyway, chop some up and take a look. And for our benefit, post some pics of the mock up. thanks.

Well, you never return crown 90 degrees to the ceiling.
I always return crown to the wall either a 90 degree cut or two 45 degree cuts depending on the size of the crown and how it looks.
Thanks for the help folks, I'll try a couple of mock-ups.....and try to send some pics if I can borrow a camera.

Thanks for the show and tell.

The shingles are some sort of cement product, all I know is that they came from some place in Wisconssin.
