I’m going to be installing some crown moulding in the living room of our small house with a cottagy feel. The casing is Carolina ( 3 1/4″) and I’ve got Coronado baseboard. I’m trying to fancy the place up a little bit, with beadboard wainscot in the kitchen, and some built-ins, etc. I like a lot of trim, but I don’t want to over-do it for the style of the house – it’s not a Queen Anne! And the living room is somewhat small (~275 sq. ft., with standard 8 ft. walls). So my question is: what are some good ideas for custom crown moulding? I could always just use the off-the-shelf ogee crown with the cove at the bottom. I couldn’t go wrong with that, but I am hoping to do something a little more special, like maybe a built-up crown of some sort. On the other hand, I don’t want it to get too big for the space, or too ornate for the house. Any ideas?

Have not heard of carolina or coronado. You have a picture or something of what it looks like.

Sure - you could put up a board first with a beaded edge (down) and mount the crown on that - it also makes for a better-attached crown since the board gives you continuous nailing.
Given your description, especially with 8' ceilings, I would not go much beyond that.
This example is with an ogee baseboard (upside down) where I suggested a beaded board (and a top board that would probably be overkill):
