I need to haul in roughly 16000 cu. ft. of top soil for a septic /lateral system. I know different type soils have different density, but I am trying to get a roug idea of how many tons of dirt I need. I am getting the dirt free but will pay for the loading and hauling. I know I had some conversion charts for that type stuff, but am unable to locate them. Anyone care to make a SWAG at it?

SWAG = 2000-2500 lbs/cu yd

dirt weights 125 ls per cu ft for sand clay, 105 per cu ft for pure sand. But dirt is sold and hauled in cubic yards not tons. hauled in weight is problem due to moisture content of dirt
Thanks
I use 110 pounds/cubic foot or 3000 pounds per cubic yard and then bump that up a bit for wetter soil and up a fair bit for really rocky stuff. And down a bit for being extra dry or for being sand- and rock-free.
Note that a 100 cubic yard excavation will yeild more than 100 cubic yards of fluffed, excavated soil. And that many operators overstate the capacity of their dump trucks. And that excavations slough sometimes. It is not unreasonable to add 20% to your haul volumes/costs.
