Installing a woodstove in my house & wanted to use cultured stone set on durock behind it. Have asked several people including my masonry supplier if the stone transfers heat into the wall. Looked on their site and still have got no definitive answer. Do I need an air space behind the durock? Anyone with any experience with this stuff in this type installation ?

Yes, you still need a one inch air space vented top and bottom between the durock and the drywall. We've done this a lot with fake brick as well as slate and soapstone (and distressed copper, very cool) Even 4" solid cinder block generally requires a one inch space behind it to combustible per code here in NC. Steel studs can come in very handy.
