Anybody have info on Cupolas? I am doing an add a level on my house and I think I don’t want to do the skylite thing. I already have 7, the light that is provided is great, especially in the winter but you loose too much heat in winter. I want to add ventilation and light to a bedroom.
Does anyone have any info on the proper scaling proportions on residential cupolas? I am looking to do a venting one with electric control window. Sort of like an electric skylite. Also interested in any unique ways to do exterior detailing, trim, etc.
Thanks

I have an '81 Olds that's about to go skyward. Electric windows of course, and the floor pan removed. Haven't yet decided about a suspended seat (for the great view 40' up). To be tied into a copper standing seam roof.
Maybe not quite what you had in mind.
My first skylight installation, in a Denver carriage house, was an illuminating experience. It did a wonderful job of framing the view.... of a utility pole. Then later in the summer I experienced the joy of direct solar gain, followed by a reflective cover to bounce it all back up. Was nice in the cooler months though. You get the drift.
Regarding the outside, you might do very well with some doodling unless you visualize better than most. As you already have 7 unshuttered skylights I don't see how you're going to lose less winter heat by adding more glass unless you get some incredible glass. Seems I remember Amory Lovins getting positive solar gain with a north facing window.
