Considering installing a curtain drain along the eve line (no gutters)
uncertain if the trench should be lined with a waterproof membrane (like plastic).
opinions?

do you want the water to seep into the foundation area or run off to a determined spot? No liner in the trench and it seeps to the foundation. I'm not sure of the longevity of plastic though.
bob...most of the time we design with large overhangs and no gutters
we usually grade to drain....but sometimes we need a drain system
nowadays we'd sleeve a 4" perf pipe (holes DOWN )...and lead it to daylight
if it's an interceptor drain ( like trying to divert some uphill runoff )...you can stone the top to let water drain down into the pipe and then flow awayMike Hussein Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore

It's more important to be sure your grade is sloping away from the house, then you can have a trench w/plastic liner, drain pipe, and stone finish (crushed 3/4") to reduce splash and prevent/control vegetation and rodent infiltration at foundation ( the latter being not so important on poured foundations, but good for old fieldstone foundations.)

good answer.
