My sincerest apologies for starting a whole new thread on the topic of curved stairs.
I’ve been reading the stuff in the archives a lot, and I’m happy to have gleaned a lot of knowledge from the contributors.
I myself am just a broke-as-hell student working his way towards a degree in architecture. I’m helping my parents with renovations to their house (formerly a school building), and one of the things we’ll be adding is a new staircase to the master bedroom loft.
This staircase will be a 180-degree curve, about 8 feet in diameter, thirteen risers, rising 8.5 feet–quite modest, really. The outer stringer won’t be too much more than 15 feet long.
Here’s the meat of my inquiry: What material can I use for the laminated stringers? Decent lumber is
i very
hard to come by in Lincoln, NE. I was at Hardwood Heaven just this afternoon, and even their poplar was a little pricey. Besides, they had very few pieces of anything that were even big enough. Of course, Menard’s ain’t got nothing (unless you actually like your boards individually wrapped).
Could I use luan ply for my stringers? It might not be as strong as laminated hardwood, but then, my staircase is a relatively small one. (And at least I know I can get it readily.)
If I really must use hardwood, where the hell do I get it in this part of the country? Cut my own trees?
-Respectfully,
Anthony
