custom homes with track home materials
I was recently installing a hardwood floor in an upscale neighborhood and, decided to go looking around at some of the homes being built around the neighborhood. I live in corpus christi where you are able to purchase a 5,000 sq’ home for about $500,000. Which isn’t bad compared to places like california or N.Y. where the price to build per sq’ foot is considerably higher. while going through this home i was disappointed buy the choice of materials the finished carpenters where using. for the baseboard, crown and window casing they chose finger jointed material. The tile and carpet looked like it was a sale purchase from home depot and the cabinetry was looked like it was just stained birch they didn’t use pocket screws or biskets to join any thing togather in the hole house. whats happening to the quality built customs homes

People only see "features" these days. (Fancy schmancy countertops, jetted tubs that will never be used) If they can't see that cheap materials were used everywhere else, they don't seem to care. Million dollar houses with builder grade vinyl windows (I've listened to builders try to claim that vinyl was superior to clad wood windows). Use cheap ####, and if you can't make it sound superior, say its greener.
I'm trying to understand why you said the carpenters chose those materials if this is a custom home.
On a custom, the customer makes the choice.
and if it is a spec home, the GC makes the choice.
The guy driving the nails rarely chooses

Your question answers itself. 5000 SF for $500K.... $100/SF. That's not enough to use high quality materials or spend the time doing a nice installation.
And for it's worth... it's TRACT... not track... house.
I though it was about track houses :( At one point a local developer approached me about putting up a resort with cottages on a rail line that ran along the waterfront. You would have checked in at a lodge and then be shunted to which ever site you chose. Nice idea but a complete nightmare logistically.
Yes, as another has said, it is "tract".
That aside, the word "custom" has gotten WAY overused. To the point I saw a builders panel truck going down the road a while back and under his name it said:
"We build individualized custom houses" (emphasis mine).

Any way you can think of working Executive in there? Like "Personalized, exclusive, executive custom homes" Maybe a bit wordy for the side of a truck.
That would work. Let's see...
"Personalized, exclusive, executive and also uniquely one of a kind custom homes" . Sounds like we have a motto.

I think finger jointing is a good use of resources for painted trim... now, mdf, that always show a touch of class<G>http://www.tvwsolar.com

Or maybe we'll rent one

Seen enough MDF lately to hold ya for a while?

During a job interview at a MDF factory, I asked the plant manager (would have been my boss) what the major issues were. He said customers complained all the time about the quality of the product.
They made me an offer, I passed.
My mother had a company remodeling across the street from her. "Custom Deluxe Construction" None of the words applied.
