Cut the baseboard profile face up at 45 deg and no miter angle.
I usually cut inside corners at 44 deg and outside corners slightly over 45 deg.

I trim houses for a living and while initially coping joints can have a learning curve, it is by far easier to get joints to fit tight. I cut the base face up with a 45 deg. bevel then cope out the remaining stock to allow for a tight fit. after a few pieces you will have it down I'm sure. remeber to use nails that are not too long for the base so to minimize the risk of hitting plumbing or wires.
