Ive been told that the way to cut crown upside down and backwards. Im coming up on a job; obviously i have not fooled with crown before. Can anyone tell me what everyone means when they say “upside down and backwards”. One more thing, is the a formula to estimate the cost of running this stuff (3 5/8 crown).

Rob,
You will place the crown on you saw as if it is sitting on the wall and ceiling, EXCEPT: The bottom of the crown (that touches the wall) will sit against the fence, while the top of the crown will sit on the table of your saw. That was the upside down part. The backwards part is the left side of the molding is actually the right side.
I cut and measure my crown exactly the way I cut base. A little short for butt ends and long for cope ends (1/8 to 3/16 long).
I find the studs to nail the bottom of the crown to those. Then shot the top plate to nail the top. The gun (mine is a hitachi angled finish nailer)tight to the wall and about 3/4" down from ceiling usually creates the correct angle to hit the plate for 3 5/8.
Cope the belly of the crown deeper than you think you need to or it will not fit tight with a 45 degree wall.
With a square room I will run two peices 1/16 shorter and tack them in place at the center. Leaving atleast 4 feet on the ends flopping.
The other two peices are cut about 3/16 - 1/4 long and double coped. Match the profiles by sliding the crown slightly up or down the wall to close any gaps and nail off.

*Good explanation Paul, even I understood it.
