I have to cut a good size hole in a wall to diagnose and repair a plumbing problem in a plaster and expanded metal wall. My past experiences doing this (cutting the hole) have been ummmm… unsatisfactory at best. What have you all found the best (cleanest, least damaging) way to do this? Thanks!

Arggggghhhh... I knew I'd seen a mention of this somewhere, but couldn't place it. Thanks for the reminder. Saw the Dust Muzzle website... looks perfect except it doesn't appear they make one to fit the PC grinder I was just given... figures.
circular saw ...
or grinder.
I set the circular saw blade the whole depth ... but do a plunge cut the whole way around ... try to cut just the plaster away first ... hit the lath next.
other way ... if holding the heel of the saw up the whole time makes ya nervous ... go 1/2" deep at a time.

Think I'm gonna go the grinder route Jeff. Just got back from picking up a "DustMuzzle"... looks like just the ticket. Thanks for the suggestions, all.
