I've laid lots of grand manors. A shingle shear makes a pretty cut, but takes some extra time. Otherwise, hook blades are the tool.

Pre snap your lines on the copper sheet.
As you set each shingle-let it run into the valley and use a scratch awl to mark the shingle to the line.Use an old pair of large tin snips for the cut.
Don't forget to "dub" the upper corner of the cut.
>>>>>>>>>>>Don't forget to "dub" the upper corner of the cut.I don't think I've ever seen more than about 2 people (one being me) dub the top of valley cuts. I personally like to cut my valley as I lay, but the "california" method has killed that method.Birth, school, work, death.....................

Thanks for the responses, I just ordered the "Shingle King" a saw that attaches to a 61/2 cordless circ saw. I'll let you know how it works out. We have tried hook blades - weather too cold to get a good grab. The shears are great until you hit the sections with the third ply. Why the dub cut?

Dubbing is cutting the top corner of the shingle in the valley back at a 45 degree angle to dirrect the water that gets under the shingles back toward the center of the valley. How are you gonna cut valleys shingles against copper with that saw?Birth, school, work, death.....................

How big of piece do you remove when you "dub". Sounds like it makes sense. I've put on many squares and I never heard of dubbing. I appreciate the tip.

I cut off about an inch or inch and a half triangle.Birth, school, work, death.....................

The saw has a guide that slides on top of the copper, lifts the shingle and provides a barrier between the blade and the copper. We set up the "Shingle King" guide on a Dewalt 6 1/2 cordless but quickly found out that there was enough room for the saw to lay into the valley where two 14/12 hips formed the valleys.
It also seemed suicidal to attempt a cut up the left and down the right on a 14 pitch roof.
Went to the roofing supply and bought 3 high quality snips. Lots of sore hands but perfect valley cuts.
The saw gets returned tomorrow.
Thanks for all the advice.
Bobby
P.S. What the california method?
Bobby S.
It's what some call the method where the shingles on one side of the valley extend thru the valley and the opposite side is laid over them and cut back in a straight line in or very near the center. No metal is used.Birth, school, work, death.....................

I thought I was a weany newbie when I cut my valleys as I laid it. Nice to hear a pro say they do too. LOL!
I did it for two reasons. 1) cutting through three layers of 40 yr shingled seemed impossible 2) it was on a 12 in 12 pitch and did not want to stand on my head in thin air to do it.
