I am going to install a deck in the corner of a house/sunroom combo. It will cover an area adjacent to the original house and have its doorway access from the sunroom. The main house has 3/4 inch hardwood, on 3/4 inch ply sub floor, on 2×10 joists-rim, on twin 2×4 plates, on 8 inch block. The sunroom floor is 5 1/2 inch lower – 3/4 inch ply on 2×6 joists-rim-ledger, on block piers. The deck will have 2×10 ledger, joists and rim.
The common approach would be to ledger the deck to the main house and float the deck at the sunroom so the deck does no pull the sunroom with it. But this would cause the 2×10 ledger to span (vertically) the rim (2 1/2 inches), plates (3 inches) and block (4 inches). So….
Can you bolt the ledger within 1 1/4 inch of the top, thereby catching the bottom 1 1/4 of the rim?
Can you bolt through a combination of plate and block?
Can you choose a larger ledger bolted only through the block letting the attachment points of the joists be so far from the bolts?
Am I missing the obvious, yet trade secret solution?
Thanks.

Here is a drawing to help visualize the situation.
Thanks
*I have a very similar house/sunroom/deck situation; I thought my only solution was to build a free-standing deck. Looks fine.
*James,Yeah, why bother to attach the deck to the house in a hap-hazard way when the deck can be framed with proper techniques in a free standing plan. A few more holes in the ground. David Taylor
