I have a customer who wants me to build a deck. Nothing fancy but wants to add a roof extension in the future. I’m not sure that I just want to run the corner post straight up and then leave them there untill they get around to it. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could add the upper post later on and be solid. I thought of using a double ended lag bolt but have no idea where to find them or if they even make them. Any ideas anyone?

Hi I used to do a lot of subcontracting for archadeck. The way we would handle that, is to build the deck without the substructure connected to the rail posts. when you bolt the rail posts to the deck and screw to each connecting rail section everything stays structurally integral until the rail posts are replaced by the roofs 4x6columns. Just cut out the top rail and bolt to the deck . A more pleasing look can be maintained by bolting to the inside frame and allowing your 4x6 and 4x4 to line up and adding a 2x4 splice for more strength.
