Deck: gap between spindels and top rail
Does anyone know what the maximum allowed distance is between deck spindles and deck top rail is? Is it under the same 4″ restriction as the gap between spindels?

Any rail gap would be 4" within the code rail height limit.
I figure if you hit the rail height then have a top rail above that it would be fair game.
The only larger limit is the triangle on the non attached rake rail which is 6".
Oh as for new code, open stringers are now against code, including exterior stairs. You need at least a 'partial riser' with the same 4" max open space. The theory is that a child could be playing on, or climbing the stair and slip through the back.
I guess its for that new breed of volvo drivers that never watch their kids... thinking its everyone elses responsibility.

That's why it "takes a village" to raise kids! ;-)
Unfortunatdly some village in Texas is missing it's idiot!Let's not confuse the issue with facts!
Dan,
Do you mean like 'The Village' the movie? ha!

I meant the book by Hillary Clinton, and don't know the movie, but "The Village" from the TV show "The Prisoner" would also be appropriate! ;-)
slipping through would be "okay" - it's that nasty hanging thing that's the problem
