Does a deck ledger need to be larger than the joists, i.e. a 2×10 for 2×8 joists. I consistantly see this detailed but don’t understand if it is a structural issue, drainage or what. Typically the ledger is hitting the rim and extending over the mudsill. Any thoughts.
Thanks.

I usually spec a wider ledger than the joists (e.g. 2x10 ledger vs 2x8 joists) for the following reasons
- I am a chronic overbuilder. I expect my decks to last under 7 feet of wet snow and/or a house party of mammoth proportions
- It allows your lag bolts to be spaced wide on the ledger and grab more width on the rim joist (which is usually a 2x10) - makes it more stable and a stronger connection
Cheers
We use the same size ledger as the joists.
With the codes calling out a ledger screw every 6" having an oversized ledger is not nessesary......
Remember to use copper flashing and heavy duty galvanized nails and hangers to combat the corrosiveness of the new ACQ copper treatment used in todays treated wood.
