For the railings was thinking of using 2×6 on top, 2×2’s for the rails, and 2×4 along the bottom. What is the max distance from post to post?
Apparently you have to have a grippable hand rail on stairs. If you are building with redwood what are your options? I have seen handrail on top of a flat 2×6, and also a handrail attached to existing rail construction with hardware, like on interior stairs at a wall. Both those options are unattractive.
On 2×12 ptdf stringers, what is the typical distance between them? For example a run of 6ft, and the stairs are 5′ wide. Using 2- 2×6 as treads on each tread.
Thx.

Don't neglect the strength of the railing. It's got withstand a 200 lb. sideload, and that kind of strength is difficult to acheive by simply bolting the posts in place. And, if you notch a 4x4 post, it almost never will take that load.
Expect some code changes on '07 reflecting this and ledger attachment. Andy

Dang...can't notch 'em, can't bolt 'em........what exactly are we supposed to do?
Block the bejeebers out of 'em. Except the wood shrinks, and things loosen.
Simpson shear wall brackets to hold the rim joist to the joists, bolts and big square washeres to hold the posts to the rim.Andy

Typically I never go more than three feet between stringers. I also rarely use 2x material for treads. I like the look of 5/4 much more. And two 5/4 or 2x 6 is right.
I also use CCA for all my risers but I use 1x for those.
Baluster spacing is code related and around here its no more than 4" max of space between spindles.
On my deck posts I never go more than eight feet post to post and when I do go eight feet I always put a support block in the center under the bottom rail (assuming you're using bottom rails)in case someone decides to sit on it...grrrrrrr.
Typically I like six foot runs but its up to your own tastes.
Be well

I do not like to separate stair stringers more than 16"OC, but it depends whether you are housing the treads or cutting the stringers, and on how long the stair set is. A three step flight is wholly different than a fifteen tread setup
