Looking for some input on a rail design for this house. Other than a variation of a 2×2 system. Retired couple, budget concerns of course.
Couldn’t find anything on the web.
Don’t think I could match existing as I doubt I could find 1×12’s that would hold up, at least here.

Wow! Nice house!
Don't know about the pickets but if it where me I'd look to do the flower box thing along the rail. Your house reminds me of those great dwellings in Bavaria sans flower boxes.

Not as great close up. Not my house, a job I'm working on.

we had to match a similar design on a chalet... we made all of the balusters out of Azek
here's that thread with the azek balusters

Thanks Mike. How is the Azek attached? Looks like he is face screwing the bottom and the top is in a groove. Probably too much $ for my project.John
You say that the prob is you can't get 1x12 material. How about something like the attached sketch? It would use 1x6 or 1x8. Looking at your location, maybe cedar?
That's cool Mike. Nice work!! I'm curious however, how did you all fare in cutting that scroll work?
I ask, because from time to time I'm into very decorative birdhouses. Built many out of wood but switched to Azek to have them last longer (and supply was no problem. Simply went to construction sites and pulled 24" pieces out of the dumpster or even asked the trimmer, if he was there, to set the waste aside for my later pickup).
Anyway, I found the Azek heated up with my scrollwork, melted but then solidified again after I had passed through. The only way I could get around the problem was to dip the blade in water about every inch.
But again, nice work!

can't remember if the thread shows... but we made a pattern and used a follower router trimmer to make the partsMike Hussein Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
any chance those existing boards could be pulled, lightly planed, liberal use of a wood restorer product, and then reinstalled and painted?????
Here's my half baked idea
Those gaps are greater than 4" so that needs to be corrected.
using the theme of that arc that replicates in the casings is a good idea
So I would cut those same pattern from sheet goods, and do the layout in the sheet so that you are saving the off cut between the pieces for use
Then do the install so that you have alternating male/female of the cuts, with about 3-1/2" to 4" spacing
For sheet panels use Azec or 3/4" MDO both sides finished.
Less waste, same basic design, and safer than current, not rot prone.

I might even paint the male/female slats alternating colours - say brwn to match current on the main slats, and cream to match the siding on the waste infill pieces.

One traditional 'swiss chalet' railing design is the Christmas-tree cutout; we make these out of 1x6; double them up and cut two at a time with a jigsaw. Tree silhouette only shows every second board.
Some areas with a lot of ski chalets lof that sort, you can even buy that pattern stock from the lumberyard.
Suggest you use cedar; pine if budget is an issue. Make sure the bottom rail is rabbetted and not dadoed, and that the floor of the rabbet is sloped to drain.
We usually toenail these in place with 16-ga air nails.

I'd make em out of some nice ACQ treated lumber.

Frenchy would suggest getting cheap black walnut from a sawmill. Actually not a bad idea if you can actually get cheap black walnut.
Ask David Dowd.

Hi John
It wouldn't be cheap, but you could reproduce that shape in 1x12 Pvc trim
Handy Dan
Just a thought but instead of 1x12's you could use 1x6's, cut the pattern on one side but with less depth so you could remain under 4" at the widest point, and then put a gap between the straight edges, anywhere from 1-4". It would still carry the theme of the window trim without the need for wide boards.
