The international code requires that handrails be grippable, no more using 2x4s or 2x6s. I don’t mind, I’m just curious if anyone has come up with any designs that they like the look of and don’t cost an arm and a leg?

Most folks just add a cheap fir indoor handrail to the guardrail. Exactly why this, that will rot in a few years, will pass while a PT 2x4 won't, points up some issues with building codes.

Well at least it's grippable until it rots. You can put a 2x4 vertically if you rout out a grip. That's the best solution I've come up with.
Interesting, we're on the 2002 IRC, and exterior hand rails can't be more than 3 1/2" in cross-sectional dimension...some clients have us screw a 2x4 on top of a whatever by 6" cap, then take it off after inspections<G> I need a dump truck, baby, to unload my head
What about copper pipe in about 1-1/2" or 2" diameter? Slip a dowel into it for support. I've also done the same with PVC pipe, but definitely less elegant!

Here's something with the grip plowed out. Might work. Table saw and roundover in a router.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

"Here's something with the grip plowed out. Might work. Table saw and roundover in a router."Yes that's legal here (NY) and about as good looking as anything I know. The copper pipe sounds pretty. How do you attach it?
I've bored the post and inserted galvanized emt into the hole. Used a stainless screw to "set" the pipe to the post. This runs post to post.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.
