I just had an arbor roof with 2×12 cedar joists added over my patio. The builder thought that joist hangers weren’t necessary. I am uncomfortable with this. Does anyone know a source for decorative,i.e., exposed joist hangers to connect my joists to the ledger board. Thanks.

Without knowing all the details I tend to agree with your builder. The hangers are necessary where serious load transfer is necessary, and a decorative roof frame doesn't constitute
i serious
load. However, you could fabricate some
i decorative
j/hangers out of angle iron, with one flange sliced twice to allow for the bends, drilled to take some screws, and paint them black. .. or you could break the bank and hire a metal smith to design and fabricate some.

*built a church using laminated beams/purlins. We had connection plates made out of steel to connect the purlins to the arches. They were primed brown and spiked to together with galvanized nails. I asked the decorating committee what color they wanted to paint the plates with and they all said dont paint at all. They said the rough finish added character. Now that all is said and done everyone thinks the connectin points are painted to contrast intentinally...
*Build you own with wood under the joists if there is room. Joist hangers are absolutely necessary (e.g. required by code here in SoCal) but I doubt the necessity of them in a porch which carries no weight except its own (e.g., no live loads). How about buying some Simpsons, taking them to a metal plater, having him strip off the galvinized coating, and brassing them? That would look nice.
*If you want both function and looks you might try a custom design welded up at a local shop. One place I built some years back had exposed purlins. I used the Simpson book as a starting place and had a local shop fabricate something. Was expensive per unit but on a share of total building cost very reasonable and they are a nice decorative detail.Just a thought.

Hey Mike,
Did they secure the 2x12's with toenails or screws? Either way
should be good enough for an arbor roof-why worry? It may still
be possible to shoot some screws in. Confused, unless you are in
a hurricane zone and have expensive things on your patio that may
be smashed!
MD (not currently in hurricane zone)
