Delta model 43-120 1/2″ spindle shaper
Does anyone have any experience with this particular Machine?
I have an oppurtunity to purchase one for a decent price ($200) with a few cutters included. I’m going to look at it tomorrow.
I can’t seem to figure out if it’s a 1 H.P. or 2 H.P., if it’s 1 H.P. I’m pretty darn sure I don’t want it.
I realize either way it sounds like a light duty machine, so I’m not sure if it’s worth it. On the other hand it wouldn’t see very heavy use. I know it was built sometime in the late 70’s from what I’ve found on the internet.
So anyone have or use one that cares to comment?
Thanks.
I’m also going to post this at Knots

I had one years ago. It is 1 HP , pretty sure. really it wasn't bad. Like a slow router table, but with the bigger dia. cutters the tip speeds were acceptable.
I'd not wantto raise panels all day, but cope and stick, and bullnose work it was fine. Don't entertain a power feeder, unless you can dial it down, I seem to think th feed speed needed to be fairly slow...but it really depends on the wood and cutter you are spinning.
200? A wee bit high..IMO. I'd offer maybe 150 depending on its shape and what xtras come with it.
If you want to dedicate it to a configuration you use frequently, snap it up. If you want to have a good all around shaper, get a bigger Grizzly or something like that..Jet is good too, at a fair cost.

yep that's the same one
okay. I use the 43-355. Any lighter than that and all I'll be able to make wooden airplanes. You didn't miss anything!!"The nearest thing to eternal life we will ever see on this earth is a governmental program" -Ronald Reagan
My uncle has the same model you have. I was never a big fan of it though it served it's purpose reasonably well.
my sentiments exactly. Interesting thing, though....When I was buying this in the late 90's, I was building a bunch of raised panel cabinet doors for my kitchen. I tried to buy other shapers. But at that time there was not a new shaper ANYWHERE! Grizzly, Delta, Jet...nothing. I found this at Woodworker's supply tucked away in their Arizona warehouse somewhere, (I was in NJ at the time). It was not my first choice...but ended up being my only choice at the time.
