Demographics and Consumption
It would seem that if we want to reduce energy consumption we would be better off bringing home flowers for our spouse than changing our light bulbs.
A recent study has quantified the extent to which divorce damages the environment. Across America, divorced households used 73 billion kilo-watt hours of electricity that would have been saved if the families had not broken up. The average number of rooms per person increases between 33% and 95%. Single person households are the largest consumers of goods and energy – even generating 50% more waste than those living in households of four or more.
