My brother-in-law was moving his refrigerator and it made a narrow, shallow (but apparently somewhat long) dent in his hardwood floor. I suggested wet cloth and hot iron to swell the fibers back to normal (woodworker’s trick).
Is there a better way to fix this? I may ask on Knots too.

I did about a dozen hammer dings in this house that way and it worked 100%.

Shep (and Andy)--thanks for the answers. I'll tell him to try it.
Does the wet towel and iron trick work through the finish, or do you need to remove the finish first and re-apply?
I ask because I have a bunch of dents from the metal feet of our ottoman.
No need to remove the finish first, just do it.
Used to use this trick all the time on gunstocks. The heck, you say?
