Hi All
I have been working on the design for an addition & have seem to have it a design roadblock that Im hoping to get some feedback from the breaktime crew.
The addition consists of an ell and a garage (that looks like a barn). The barn doors on the front of the garage are false doors, and the main house is on the far right.
My question concerns the ell in the middle. Im not sure that the windows as shown are the right design for the house…they seem to lack character, either too many, too big or too small …Im just not sure.
Would appreciate any thought you may have………….
thanks,
JR

Those windows don't bother me, so much, tho' I'd draw them up the same size as the house windows just to see if I liked it better. That said, I'd probably design this "ell" to look like it was originally an open breezeway that had been closed in -- like maybe a couple of posts with windows, and maybe even a door, between. As it is now, the barn looks out of place because there's no good transition between the people house and the horse house, so it's the barn windows that look out of place to me.
But then, I'm no designer, so feel free to ignore this suggestion! ;-)

Everything fits, until you put glue on it.

I toyed with the idea of "infilling" when I first began sketching ideas but gravitated along the lines to using a series of windows. After reading your post I think your idea needs to be revisited ...many thanks for your thoughts!
what about losing the middle window and mulling the other 2 together?
either too many, too big or too small ...Im just not sure
Size matches the rest; try 4 instead of 5--try two pairs with 12-18" at the center, and allow some wall to "show" at either end.
2¢ worth.
Too jammed-in on the sides - I'd try for four, with even spacing between the windows (X) and from the outer windows to the abutting walls.
1/5 X 1/5 X 1/5 X 1/5 X 1/5
I'd also draw it with equal spaces between the four, then one-half that on either side of the group. 1/2 X 1/4 X 1/4 X 1/4 X 1/2

I'd have 3 instead of the 5 shown .
What is the function of the space behind those windows?
Dang! It sure took somebody long enough to ask the right first question;)

Only after I had an answer typed out....
was the first thought I had on this

The area directly behind the windows contains a 4' wide hallway the length of the south facing wall that runs from the entry door (on the farmer's porch) to the garage... behind the hallway itself (starting from the entry door &directly ahead) is a sitting area off the kitchen w/a woodstove..to its left a pantry.. and to the left of the pantry a mudroom w/ access to the garage...the very end of the hallway leads to the stairs that go above the garage to the bonus room (thats why the garage has a shed roof bump out to make up for the room lost for the stairs without adding additional space in the bonus room)

I'd do fewer windows, sized to be what is on the near corner of the house, and possibly make them six over one muntin pattern

My first thought was to match the style (4 over 4, if I'm not mistaken?) instead of one over one. Smaller might look better too.
