Got a Home Depot “pro desk” flyer in the mail today advertising the “new and exclusive to Home Depot” Dewalt 18V 16ga finish nailer. No hose, no gas cylinders, just a standard DW 18V battery.
I’m not much for Dewalt, but this one looks interesting. Anyone know anything about it?
FWIW the newly revamped Bosch 13 amp reciprocating saw was in that flyer too. Tasty…. and definately on the wish list.

I'm very intrigued by that one..and after spending all afternoon trying hammering where a hammer didn't fit I was seriously considering a cordless nailgun but don't like the Paslode. You need to buy that DeWalt so I can check it out. BTW, the Senco cordless nailer is nice but there is a bit of a delay before the shot, I would guess the DeWalt is similar since there is no gas cartridge.

I'm not in the market myself...only cordless I own or have found a real need for are drills and impact drivers. You'll have to go this one alone!
But I'll be happy to take it for a dance and break it in for ya.
I tried the dewalt at a tool show last week. Was the best Ive seen yet. Heavy but didnt have a noticable lag between shots and could even bounce fire it. The one I tried was a 16 gauge I think, but there were other models there. The batteries were interchangable with other dewalt tools too I believe. They quoted something like 600 nails per charge. Tried the new bosch impact driver and it looked good too. Bosch also had a mitersaw stand that they said will be out soon. Folds up and can be wheeled around.
Saw one today, tried to pick it up. Tore the rotator cuff in my right shoulder. Okay, maybe not. But I don't think that thing was no lightweight before they coupled it to the 18v battery, which can be used as a counterweight in a tractor pull. Nice concept though, but I don't think you're gonna hang too many feet of crown with that puppy.
I think that's the most honest tool review I've ever seen. Funny stuff. I guess I don't have to sell my Paslode stock just yet, huh?
I think the 12volt version of the nailgun would be sufficient..they say you get 600 shots off of it. The 12volt hammer drill I have lasts forever for me, I can drill 1/8 & 1/16th steel for a couple hours on the same charge and it kept going when drilling out masonry holes for a dryer vent. I saw one of 12Volt nailgun kits going on eBay for $365 , while it'd be a nice toy I think i'll try that Hart Patriot finish hammer @ $60.00 instead and wait till I see a Senco cordless used.

No kidding!!!!!! That sucker is heavy. Was at Lowes today and picked (physically that is) one up. That thing is frickin heavy. Makes by old Duofast boat anchor frameing gun feel like a light weight. I looked for the anti-gravity button on it but couldnt find it. Maybe its only activated when you put nails in it.
I think Dewalt missed big time on this one ( the new generation bammer???).

I didn't think it was heavy. I don't think my Milwaukee SCM @ 75#'s is heavy either...
Too many ifs, ands, ors, and buts about this one...

What's odd is that I hadn't heard/seen any advertising about it until I saw it at HD.
You must work out with weights the size of small mountains, cause I thought the thing weighed just short of a metric ton. (My rotator cuff IS ripped, but not by the DeWalt. Tennis, overhead smashes, and little old ladies, what a nasty combination. That's all I'm saying about that.)
I never met a tool I didn't like!
I hadn't heard about it either till I read it mentioned here and saw the DW display at Lowe's...
Played with it again today... DW lovers can have it...
No I don't lift wieghts...

I happened to be at HD just today myself ...
and saw one for the first time ...
I'm with you ...
not heavy in the least bit ....
not sure how or what it shoots ...
but not heavy.

It shoots those "T" headed nails from Paslode that really show...
Bump mode is the only way to get the nails to drive reasonably flush.. I marks the wood when it's bump fired...

T head's defeat the purpose ...
and not thinking I'll bump fire my crown on!
Looks like I'm back to considering the Senco ...

Place and shoot ... 1/8 to 3/16" proud..
Bump and and 95% flush and the other 5% either a little proud or counter sunk.. It shoots those T head eyesore nails..
A little more than 3 strips killed a fresh battery.
Balance is okay.. Light wieght... Rep says to bump shoot...

Sounds like they got some bugs to work out, eh?
Haven't seen it yet but.... Every once and a while there will be a Dewalt demo team set up at your lumberyard. I have 18v DeWalt drill and saw combo. Like em but sometimes that 18v gets heavy overhead or ..... I told this demo team that there were some changes I would like to see made. There are probably other ways to give feedback too. Now if you like the interchangablity but find it heavy how about a belt mounted battery clipped into a short cable (could even be coiled like a telephone handset) and the other end would fit into the nailer. It could even fit into the drill or saw if it wan't too likely to get cut off.
Best thing I can think of for some of my other DeWalt tools is to have the option of battery or a AC/DC converter that would fit into the same place as the battery and have a nice length cord to the extension cord. Then I could use the battery (only option now) or the converter if an AC power source was handy. Could even fit in the same case in place of the extra battery. Come on after market people! Works with trucks! Tyr
Plenty of people run the their cordless drills off car batteries, you could probably just run a piece of romex from the contacts on your drill to the drill's battery mounted on your wasit, it should work no problem.
I posted before on this forum about doing an AC adapter for the cordless drill to run it off of 120v line voltage, basically the issue is that the transformer I'd be using would need to accomodate enough amps for the drill and the ones that did 3amps or so were quite large boxes or expensive enough, $50 at Radio Shack, that it ended up being a dead end for me.
If I found a cheaper 3amp transformer or less bulky way to run my cordless off of AC power I'd definitely go for it as I prefer my DeWalt cordless hammer drill to the Milwaukee magnum I've been using as a corded on a recent job. I take my hand tools home from this job every night so ot lugging in another tool would be convenient, plus the Magnum is sucking for drilling through steel frames and the lack of clutch causes it to overdrive screws into the soft framing lumber.

Good to hear a response. My comment was not written in the vein of "how do I do this" but rather a problem solving idea that might get a manufactuer on board. I think I remember your post on the AC/DC converter. If I wanted to support the 18V battery on a waist belt or put it in my nail bag I probably have enough dead batteries around to provide the "male" end of a cord. I haven't even seen the nailer referred to in this thread, much less have one. But tomorrow I'll be heading back to a basement remodel where I lugged my 2hp stacked tank compressor down the stairs. I can guarantee that IT is heavier than any 18v powered nailer. Of course Homex says it has a texture set up for small jobs that will run off my compressor (4.3 cfm @ 90 psi) so may be it was worth it. Be nice to have no hose though, just like it has been nice to have no cord. I'll look at HD for the nailer just to see if it is something I could use. Tyr
I haven't even seen the nailer referred to in this thread.....
You can't be serious...

Why can't I be serious? A new tool. A thread containing viewpoints about how heavy the 18v battery makes the new nailer. A possible solution proposed. Or are you referring to the comment about using part of old battery? Clarification requested. Tyr
Just the tool it's self... and it ain't heavy..

So, like I said....I'll hunt one down. Tyr
Why do you think it's heavy??

Like I said, I haven't seen the nailer yet to judge it's "heavyness". I have used, and presently use, the 18v screwgun (old B&D term). Overhead, with continued use it is heavier than the 12v, or I could even go back to the 9 something volt B&D, or the 7.2v B&D etc. All the latter were much lighter than the 18v but then again they couldn't do what the 18v could do either. Pick your poison! The thread was about someone else thinking the nailer was heavy. Tyr
I wonder if there are two diffferent models out there. The one I looked at at Lowes was heavy ( of course this is relative...), especially for a trim gun. It was noticeably heavier than even my Duofast framing gun ( which many have referred to as boat anchors).

I only saw the one... It's a lot lighter than my Senco SN4 or SKS2....
I don't think the SN4 is heavy and that shoots a 20d...
