I think someone in an earlier post described the noise of the 705 as “an evil roar” which is a rather apt description. I have one and it’s noise level is pretty painful. I feel like I have to put on ear protection for just one or two small cuts. A guy sure doesn’t want a wimpy saw but dang, that thing is loud!
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the Makita, Bosch or Hitachi saws are as loud? If any of them are significantly quieter, I’d sure like to know. I’m using a DeWalt blade and maybe other blades are little quieter, but I can’t imagine the blade itself would make a huge difference.

Blades make a difference. You should wear ear protection for every cut, anyways.
Huh?...What?
Yep, the blade can make a big difference. Take the blade off the saw and run it for "one cut" and notice the noise difference.

For safety, I always run my 705 without a blade. It is quieter, no tearout, a bit less heavy, and WAY safer. :-)But seriously, they are noisy saws. The newer models with long belts driving the arbor are less noisy, and a sharp, straight blade helps.Bill
I tried your "blade off" suggestion. Made a good bit of difference. Although still noisy, it's tolerable without a blade on it. Now I just have to find a "noisless" blade. Seems to me that Fine Woodworking or FHB did a test some while ago on the noise factor of different blades. Does anyone have that information?BTW....anyone have any thoughts on the noise comparison between the saws I mentioned previously?
You might ask the blade question at Knots. Most of the table saw blades are 10" not 12", but someone may know what makes a blade quiet.

Just now found a review of 12" sliders at the Tools of the Trade website. Although the 705 isn't a slider, the following comment probably applies to it as well:"The soft-start features on the Hitachi and Makita models and their extra quiet operation really made them favorites in the shop. The Bosch and Ridgid are also acceptably quiet. The DeWalt is noticeably louder than the others."Combine that with a loud blade and that's the reason for my problem. Soon as I get the $$ (which may be a while), I'll be switching.
I hate to see you throw out a good saw just because of the noise. That 705 is an excellent miter saw. Always accurate, plenty of power, not too heavy.

No need to throw it out. I can always sell ant tool I get tired of or replace with a newer-better

That was a figure of speech. What I meant was .. if he needs a saw that will do something that the 705 won't, then there's a good reason to buy a new saw. For example, double bevel, or a slider for wider boards. But to replace a very good saw just because it's noisy ... that's what earplugs are for.

j,
I have a DW705S and to be honest with you, I think it's pretty quiet. It has the Dewalt blade that came on it and I see no reason for hearing protectors, and to be honest with you I wear them all day long in my machine shop so I am sensitive to the noise. I wonder if something is wrong with yours ??

Keep not wearing earplugs with your saw and soon you won't need them in the shop with the rattle guns, either. HEY!

Jesse,
You are probably right although I only use the saw a few times a year ! The shop is constantly noisy and I started using the ear muffs years ago. Its funny how once you start using them, I swear your hearing gets more sensitive. I even wear them cutting grass etc.
Happy New Year to all !!!!!Bill Koustenis

I must be living in a different universe. I have had the 705 since they hit the market I don't know how many years ago (12?), have used all the other saws, and have not noticed any big difference in noise.
For me, it has outperformed all others including the ever worshiped Bosch. I use my 705 every day with the Freud Diablo blade and it is as accurate as the day I got it. Gotta take care of it, rebuild it when needed, clean it and adjust it.
I probably will break down and get the 718 scms this year because of it's increased capacity. It will stay mostly in the shop though because of weight.
I will say however the Makita and Bosch are very good saws.
I don't own a Dewalt. But awhile back some cabinet installers were on the same job, using the Dewalt for cutting trim. Wow, was that thing noisy! I wasn't even using it myself, but I put my earmuffs on anyway. I've heard belt drives are quieter than direct drive. I've got the Bosch 10" compound slider, and love it. But it is a little on the heavy/awkward side, for carrying!
I guess I'm a little touchy about noise since I've noticed some hearing loss. I'm pretty strict about wearing ear protection even when mowing, but it's really a pain to need to do a couple little quick cuts and have to wait until I get the ear muffs and put them on. With the DeWalt blade, the noise is actually painful. I'm going to try to hunt up that article that rated the quietness of different blades and get a really quiet one. That'll help.
