I fried the motor on my DeWalt cordless drill the other day so I had to find a local service center. While I was looking up the center on the DeWalt website, I had forgotten that Black & Decker now owns PC. The PC center that I knew well, now is the service center for DeWalt also – which is very convenient. I have to admit, I like that aspect of the union.
However, I was disappointed with the new layout or, maybe a better description, the theme of the center. First of all, there was Black and Decker stuff all over, which I have no use for whatsoever. There were also two or three displays of DeWalt “stuff”, i.e. shirts, hats, coffee cups, etc (it felt like Starbucks). The center previously just housed PC equipment and they had a ton of refurbished tools. I was looking forward to possibly picking something up. But now the used PC tools were limited to one or two tables and a rack. Half the place was new DeWalt stuff. All of which would be cheaper to buy over the internet or possibly at a big box.
Again, since I have some PC and some DeWalt tools, it was nice to have one convenient place to go for service. But now I don’t feel that I have a reason to go unless a tool craps out.
Just a short rant, thanks for listening,
Joe

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
One thing about DW. They do know how to 'accessorize'. Don't they?
I do have to say the service was excellent. Didn't ask how I fried it, just checked the manufacturing date on the drill and said it was a warranty fix and that was it.
They did mess up my non-fat decaf hazelnut latte though.
I go into my local Dewalt service center often cause they have a decent assortment of small accessories in the clearance bins - like jigsaw blades, planer blades, bit sets, etc. Often for
.20 on the dollar or so.The only two Dewalt tools I own are the 14" multi-cutter metal chopsaw and the 618 router kit and those two tools are excellant. I've got to say though that I hear of more Dewalt tools breaking down than most other major tool makers. Maybe it's cause there's so many of them around, but still, every time I go in the service center it seems like there's maybe 1-3 people going in there to drop off a fried cordless body. My buddy has a bad 18volt drill body, a worn our 18 circ saw, and a recip saw that's on it's last legs.I've had a few problems with my Bosch kit, but still, they feel like they'll last a good long time.Funny thing is, most of the guys dropping off the 18 volt drills and paying a flat rate $89-$110 to refurbish them must not realize that the latest XRP's are all over Ebay for between $80-110 each brandnew due to all the folks getting deals on combos and breaking them up to sell.Speaking of which - smokin deal at HD tools:http://www.heavydutytools.net/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=464JT
