Just filled up my little transfer tank in the back of the truck, the truck itself, and two 5 gallon cans of gas for the compressor and stuff. Diesel was $3.03/gallon. Didn’t even look to see what the 87 gas was since I don’t buy much of it. $183.44
Ouch.
Whatchooo payin’?

Not off road... I use the clear cuz sometimes I'll hit the truck with the fuel in the transfer tank if I've got the trailer and finding a big station isn't so convenient at the time... or sometimes just because the stuff in the transfer tank is getting old so I'll want to use it up. I only need to fill the forklift about once a month (tops) anyway.View Image
IIRC diesel doesn't get "old"... fairly stable stuff....
diesel is more tham premium here... that just isn't right and doesn't even begin to make sense....
somebody "raided" my transfer tank.(about 200 gal)
gawd do I have an attitude....
stared useing for cast of and used tolulenes, MEK, alcohol, thinner and what not...
"neighbor " from TX trashed his truck engine the day after the tank was emptied...
I'm gonna settle that score and then some...

$3.44 in Leadville today, had to top off these 2 Pigs with Jerry jugs, 3 trips & $135 large & we could have gone back for more,
Lemme see if I under stand this ...
You use a transfer tank to hold junk fluids ... somebody siphoned the tank ... the next day your neighbor trashed his engine ... ? Sounds like guilt by association. And automatic payback.

I dont know , but what a fine ending for a theif . I do hate you lost it . To me it would be worth losing it to catch somone that way. Been a lot worse had it been deisels tank of road taxed fuel.

I'd always heard diesel got old... but a few months ago i drained the tanks on a cube van i'd purchased for the transmission (ado40e? or something like that) I know that thing had been sitting for 5+ years ... fuel looked good... let the 5 gal jugs sit for a day and nothing settled to the bottom.... so i used it in my bobcat... ran & started as well as it ever did...
question? can i purchase off road fuel for construction site use? how & where? is it worth it? i have a small 250gal diesel tank that i've never used...
thanks
P
Off highway diesel (red-dye diesel) is fine for construction sites. I don't know about your area, but I've normally found it any place that does just fuel/fluids. Look up petroleum in the phone book, and the places that sell bulk motor oil, methanol, tranny fluid, etc. will have it, usually at a card lock.zak
"so it goes"
I don't have a diesel powered anything but I was curious so I checked to see what we are paying here in British Columbia. After conversion to US gallons and Dollars.
Diesel is from $3.37 to $3.98, and regular unleaded is $3.64 to $4.15. I hope it doesn't mean that we win!
There must be similar web sites to this one that can give prices across the US.http://www.bcgasprices.com/Edited to add. There is a site for all of North America.http://www.gasbuddy.com/

Have you gone up on your rates to cover this? I read that we haven't yet seen the full affects of the fuel costs because a lot of companies and pros have not jacked the rates yet. When they have no choice but to charge then the price of everything will go up.
Haven't gone up with my rates Mike. It's alot of work to keep them steady right now anyway with the slow down in new housing starts. Up is out of the question right now.View Image

#2 on road, about $3.40, Biodiesel about $3.70 in the Bay area. Ouch for sure, but it's much worse in rural areas where wages are low, and fuel costs are a more significant part of the budget.
Why is diesel at least as expensive as premium gas now on the west coast? is it that way back east?
zak
"so it goes"
Diesel's been pretty much on line with premium gas here for a good year or so. Sometimes more expensive in the winter.View Image
Were you the guy that posted about making your own Bio-diesel?
If so, how does that work?
I made my own biodiesel up until I moved, about a week ago. It worked out great, if that's what you're asking- collect used fryer oil from restaurants, (they're eager to get rid of it), process it with methanol and lye (a totally hands-off deal with our processor), and then wash the fuel. It took some time and attention, but not much money (~70 cents/gallon). But if you don't enjoy doing it yourself at some level, it's not really worth the time investment.
Here's some more info about it, if you want it.
I'll probably keep using the biodiesel despite the cost, because it's the reason I bought a bigger truck than I would have preferred (to get the diesel engine).zak

$2.77 for regular unleaded today.

$3.09 for regular gas here, on Saturday bought for $2.88 about 60 miles south of here in Iowa (out in the boonies), saw on the news that some stations have it for $2.98 up in the Twin Cities, about 90 miles north of here.Gas prices are almost as weird as the stock market.

Thanks for the link, interesting stuff, seems like it would be more time consuming then they suggest though.
In our case, most of the time consuming part was building the processor, and I enjoy metal fabrication. It was a more automated processor than the ones on that site.
But you're right, it's just one more thing to do after work a couple times a month, and it requires a fair bit of space, which I no longer have.zak
"so it goes"
.70 cents/gal does sound pretty sweet though
spent $100 today, didn't quite fill up the truck. I just couldn't bear to spend more than 100.
$3.70/gallon for biodiesel.zak

Anbyone see the news about the idea that in the US we have so much more recently discovered oil in the US than anywhere else in the world. Some of the old oil wells have been leaking and have had to be pumped again. Sounds like a case of big business trying to get more money so they can retire and have their huge yachts built in China and mooring in France.
Nope, never heard that. What I've heard is more along the lines of flat or declining production from Saudi Arabia and elsewhere, along with surging demand from China and India.
You're not Danny and you're not Craig, but I don't recall you from the Oasis. You don't run SVO? By the way was your father/grandfather ZAK the sculptor?
I don't think you know me, I've only been in Berkeley 1 week. I haven't gone to the Oasis yet, probably I will in the next couple days. Now I'll have to look up a sculptor named ZAK. . . I'm pretty sure it's not me.zak
"so it goes"
Welcome to west Berkeley! If you're into biodiesel /SVO you will soon get to know Craig and Danny. By the way Zak was a sculptor in Berkeley in the 60's. My father's contractor clients often had him make an enamel type of sculpture to put on the front of the apartment building they built. I don't know what happened to him, but I often wonder. This is a small town, if you live here long enough. My building local inspector lives in a house built by my father's former boss. What goes around comes around and around and around! I love my home town. Well my wife returns tonight, so I won't be spending much time "taking a break-time".
You may already know this... if you're into biodiesel you'll want to check out Gary, the owner of Sun Light and Power.
Were you the guy that posted about making your own Bio-diesel?
If so, how does that work?
You got two different tracks there. One is to buy a converter dealie that lets you burn straight veg oil. The other method is to refine the veggie oil into diesel.
IIRC, method #2 (converting it to diesel) then lets you use it in all diesel vehicles (although some of the hoses might need updating).

Yeah, BioD is good in all diesels, though some are pretty picky about the quality of the fuel, others not so much.
SVO conversion has always been tempting to me, but even after spending 1 or 2 grand on a conversion, you have to collect oil, store it, and filter it before you can put it in the tank. I never minded processing the oil as much as I minded moving it around and filtering it- that stuff can be messy.zak

Has to do with that 16 mile Alaskan pipeline that BP hasn't maintained and now the pipe wall tests for 77%-82% eroded in spots. That pipeline supplies much of the West coast with diesel. 400,000 barrels a day offline for who knows how long. May not return to full output after shutdown.
The section of pipe was tested only after government mandate following a 250,000 +/- gallon spill in March. There was a few barrel spill recently which prompted the ultrasonic pipe testing. BP does not believe in sending pigs through that pipe for visual inspection.
You know, at $7.5 billion dollars in profit last quarter (that is $964.00 in profit each and every second for 90 calendar days), I can understand the difficulties in funding maintenance.......
The total anticorrosion package for last year was less than $100 million.

Maybe they are doing it just because they can :)
Diesel has been more than regular unleaded here for a while, too, but it depends on where you go. Gasoline and diesel is 10 to 15 cents higher here in town than the neighboring towns, and I don't know why. I do not buy fuel in the town I live in because of that.
I think that's pretty much it.The diesel crowd is at least to a certain point, a captive market. Whatta they gonna do ? Throw some cheapo unleaded in there ?

$2.89 - 2.99 here in TX for road diesel.
I last filled my transfer tank with off road 2 weeks ago....$2.26.
44 gallons of self-service 87-octane unleaded = $146.96
Edited to add: Diesel cost more than 87-octane unleaded here in San Diego.

$3.39 today.
Yeah, it's a kick in the shorts to be sure.
Rates? They have to. Something has to change. I'm spending three times on fuel what I did two or three years ago. For the small towns near us, I never used to fuss over a ten, fifteen mile trek. But I'm charging for it now.
Was it you I was telling about chipping the truck? Man am I eternally grateful for that.

I just filled up yesterday on the south side of Indy for $2.93. Around me the highest station is at $3.19(on the north side of Indy). When I got my Cummins in May of '99, I was paying $0.89 per gallon. About a month and a half ago I put a new lift pump and injection pump on the truck. Been getting better fuel mileage since, but the prices still hurt. I also started using Stanadyne lubricity additive because of the new low sulfur diesel. I don't want to replace another injection pump for another 200k miles.
I have raised my rates slightly. I use about the same amount of fuel every year, and it goes towards overhead costs.
About a week ago I saw some analyst on TV saying how fuel prices would drop back down to the $2.00 range, but that wouldn't be for a couple years. Wonder what he was smokin'.

It's a little over $3.00 here. Our fleet at work is all diesel. The boss has always used off road in them. We have our own tank. I'm not sure what that is a gallon but he saves a bunch.
Of course I know it's illegal. One of these days he's gonna pizz off the wrong guy and then it'll all come to a head. But untill then I like to think of it as my ace in the hole come payback time.

$3.20 must not be that big a deal. Every time I run to the hardware store or local yard, I see three or four contractor vehicles in the parking lot running - and not just for a minute or two.
macho at any cost...

I'm spending close to $4000.00 per month on diesel fuel keeping two trucks going. It's kicking my a$$! More than double in 4 years.
