Is there any substantial difference between, for example, Laticrete admix #3701 and say, Custom Building Products Acrylic admix (found at Home Depot at about 1/3 the price)? I am laying 12 I 12 slate over a concrete slab.

Short answer: No. A better answer concerns the performance expectations of a product. Laticrete performs to a higher level. For your intended use (light residential, yes?), just go with the customs. Just be sure to stay within single mfg. Don't go mixing products from one mfg with products from a different mfg. Materials are proprietary and are formulated to each mfg's products.
