I am intersted in having a dimensional roof put on a house. Why do dimensional shingles have a different break from the 6″ side to side break on ordinary shingles? Is it for looks only? Can they be installed like ordinary shingles?

Most dim. shingles only have three differant types in the package. If installed the same as three tabs you would see an ugly pattern. Dont get confused its easy to run them. Start by cutting your first shingle 6" less then the first, then the next 6" less again. Follow that procedure until your last piece is 6". Then start at the bottom again and run up your row till you have a full shingle on the end again. over and over again.
*Read the directions on the packages of shingles. Most lumberyards won't mind if you flip 'em over and have a look. Unless you're a "real man" who won't read directions, this method may work.
