I am hoping for a little advice from all of you. I’m remodeling my dining room and though I would build a ceiling with some relief. I’m planning on running 1″x4″ in perpendicular directions along the ceiling every 24″ o.c. so that the ceiling will have inset squares spaced 3.5″ apart. I also plan to trim out the inside edges of these squares with a simple trim.
My quandary is this; I plan to use 3/8″ plywood on my ceiling so that I have something to nail to but I am guessing that I should also use sheetrock under the plywood to meet fire code (I live in MN). What do you guys think? Thanks.

From my experience, code would definitely require the drywall for fire rating, likely 5/8".

But what do we know about your local fire code? You can find that out from your local dept but if you are bootlegging itwithout permitting then why worry about codes?
Yes, use SR. and it needs to be taped to meet code or flames will sread right through the seams.Excellence is its own reward!
