I want install a fireplace, but I don’t want to erect a chimney, so I’m looking at direct vent units (gas). Does anybody have any recommendations on models, etc? I have 2×4 exterior walls with T-111 siding. I would like to install a raised hearth, and would also like the option of using gas or wood.
Thanks for any feedback.

I've installed several DV gas fireplaces (Vermont Castings all).
You don't need a "chimney" per se, but you need a chase for the vent, of course.
And you need a flashed vent cap on the roof or exterior wall, depending on the configuration of your installation. And on a roof install, there will be a minimum heighth requirement for the exhaust, depending on location, roof pitch and roof material. On wall exhausts, you must be away from windows and doors, of course.
The IRC codes are pretty specific about the installation method, as are the manufacturers.
While I've not dealt with any DV wood fireplaces, pellet stoves use DV.
If it's not wanting a visible chimney that concerns you, the vent caps can be about as visible as a kitchen exhaust or one of those box type roof vents.
"Oh, please, Mr. Bill! Don't make me put it on the roof!
(Sorry, couldn't resist!) :-)

You don't need a chimmy chase with a direct vent. You can go straight out the back. Or up and a 90 and out the wall.
True, you don't need a chase, but it looks better than staring at an exposed SS pipe....IMO. :-)
No pipe would exposed. Just the termiation cap. Here are some options for direct venting.http://www.hansenwholesale.com/fireplaces/lennox/mpd3530.htmlhttp://www.dukefire.com/gasventoptions.htmhttp://www.dukefire.com/dvgasproducts.htmhttp://www.dukefire.com/dv_plan_install.htmhttp://www.dukefire.com/dvkith.htmhttp://www.cjshomedecor.com/acatalog/Simpson_Direct_Vent_Pipe_GS.htmlBut whatever you do, it needs to "look right".I live on a lake and the lots are narrow. So often all you see from the road is garage door. The lake side is the "money side".New 2 1/2 story that really screwed it up. All wood siding, with a bump out on the lowest level for a direct vent gas fireplace on the lake side. With the termination cap right on the patio. Then covered with a small shed roof. All of the under the 2nd story deck.
Do you mean fireplace or stove? I put in a DV Vermont Casting "Radiance" stove and couldn't be happier. It's in North Carolina, and I chose LP with a remote! At 3 a.m. and the room has chilled believe me you don't want to get up to put another log on the fire. With LP you can set the thermostat or just click the remote and presto.
