I installed a new kitchen aid DW maybe 6 months ago. Put in the airgap as recommended in instructions, but it does not go thru the countertop..up as high as possible in the under-sink cabinet. Now, for no apparent (!) reason, the drain water from the dw comes gushing out the airgap. Took it apart, and no apparent blockages in the AG. Any ideas? Delete the AG and run the discharge hose loop as high as possible in the cabinet?

Yes.
Never seen an air gap in so carolina. route the hose up
The failure can be due to junk in the tubing, or due to very slight misalignment of the nozzle relative to it's "target".
But most modern DWs are designed so that they are OK without an air gap. The only reason to install one is that local code may require it.
The purpose of an airgap is to prevent backflow from the waste line back to the dishwasher. They're a code requirement around here and I don't think I've ever seen one that didn't go through the sink deck.
If yours used to work ok, check the discharge line (the larger line connected to the disposal) for obstructions and also make sure the airgap is vertical.
