I am in the process of tiling my kitchen floor. The cement board is down- 1/4 hardiebacker. When I measure from the cement board to the underside of the counter I have about 34 and 1/4 inches. When I lay a tile down dry and measure from the tile up I get 37 and 7/8 allowing about an eighth for thinset that takes me down to about 37 and 3/4. Right now I have not put any cement board in the DW hole. Should I leave out the board and tile? Should I cement board but not tile the DW space? Should I cement board and tile the DW space and hope for the best?

In older homes like these, the main remodeling goal is often a more welcoming, more social, and more functional kitchen.

Be careful about not blocking the existing DW in the space.
And be aware that DWs have adjusting feet - when measuring the height of the DW, take that into account.
I recently installed engineered bamboo in a kitchen = the 5/8" thickness left about 1/6th too little height for the DW with the adjuster feet all the way up.
And the counter had been apparently laminated in place, I couldn't ship it.
I got that 1/16 + with shims under the adjoining cabinets.

Black Hole tile? I am assuming you mean 33 7/8"
The minimum height on a Bosch is 34 1/16"
I believe Whirlpool has one that fits at 33 7/8."
Asko and Fisher Paykel have them shorter for big bucks... ADA compliant ones may be shorter, too.
I've cut the lip on the counter before, not too attractive...
oh hell, just tile it and hope for the best!

If you can find a spec. on this DW that might help you consider what you can do.
I've found that there are a couple DW's that will allow 33-5/8's.........or maybe it was a 1/2. That was with the feet on and adjusted all the way.
But I've also seen people plunk down lam. floor over all the built up layers of lino and invariably trapped the DW.
If it's an old one, hunt out the spec or somehow figger the minimum space needed.
While you're at it-find some new models that give you an idea of options when the current one bites the dust.
Thanks for the replies, and yes it is 33 and 7/8 I don't know where 37 came from.
The old DW has bit the dust and is out, with out a choice on a new model I have no spec. But I need to get the tile done.
I am replacing the counters too with PF laminat which I asked about in a recent discussion. My plan was to tile the hole, and then if necessary shim the new counters up to "just the right height based on the new DW.
Sounds like you got your answer. Cabinets might need to be shimmed up anyway, depending on settling issues.
As Snort notes in his comment, there are ADA compliant dishwashers which are around 32 1/2" in height. GE,Frigidaire, Bosch, Whirlpool, and Asko all make an ADA compliant model. The GE model at around $400 seems to be the most reasonably priced.

Hey thanks for the info. I had not thought of an ada dishwasher.
If you are pulling the counter tops just spend a few hours and raise the cabinets to where they should be. The ada appliances aren't going to be cheaper than the regular model.
