In February, there was a discussion about relining a fireplace chimney with stainless steel. Is this a viable DIY project? What are some good sources of the SS liner? What would be the approximate cost for materials? Should I tear out the terra cotta? I am afraid it will continue to degrade and start to fall down the chimney.
The fireplace now consists of a wood burning insert and the chimney is lined with terra cotta. The fireplace has rust problems, the flue cannot be opened (rust), and the terra cotta is very cracked throughout the length of the chimney. We plan on purchasing a Vermont Castings Winter Warm Small to replace the insert. One possible hang up I foresee is that the outlet from the insert is round and the chimney is rectangular. Also, what is a good way to “cap” the chimney?
