Has anyone built an outdoor wood furnace themselves?
I mean from scratch, not a manufactured model that you installed.

Few people understand it. Nobody agrees what it is, how to learn about it, or who's responsible for it. It has never been more important

A boiler? How well do you weld?
PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
Welding, I'm passable but thinking more along the lines of a firebrick design in that I auctionbought a slew and I mean slew of firebrick a few years back.be dead on or that quarter inch is going to haunt you
Built an indoor one, few hundred feet of 1/2 pipe inside firebrick - what mehod do you plan to use to transfer heat to indoors?
Outdoor fed Rumsford may be worth looking into.
Not sure of a design. Just gathering data right now.
1/2 pipe inside firebrick meaning you heated water by circulating or as a few hundred foot long water tank?
I'm thinking something large that could take goodsized logs.
Like a four footer.be dead on or that quarter inch is going to haunt you
Network of pipes in fireplace and in 18" sq flue. Water circulates in the pipes to a pair of old car AC condensers in the ducts in the basement. Can easily heat 5300 sq ft from low 20s (never gotten colder than that here)
Burned 7-10 cords a year when house was exclusively heated with firewood.
Photo of back wall of fireplace, 6 ft triangle, can take 5ft log
edit PS; yep, I've got a motorized pipe threader, plumbing job would be a killer without such aids.

I've got a surplus one (boiler) if you want to come after it. Takes 4' logs. Used to be a backup to solar system for 7 apts. Minimal use, but too large for my application. 1/2 ton pickup not recommended. 5/16" plate IIRC.PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
