Do You Work on Good Friday

CapnMac | Posted in Business on April 14, 2006 04:54am

Do you work on Good Friday?  Can you?  Just another day?

Just curious.

The schools are all out; the City offices are closed (Garbage collection working in one town but not the other).  “Service” businesses are about half open (depending on the number of employees who have to stay home with kiddos not in school, or not on vacation to gramma’s on the “three day weekend”).

Watching the vehicles on the road this morning, the contractors with 2-3 or fewer employees are working (’cause that’s what they do, Friday after Thanksgiving, Saturday, Sunday, every day not spent fishin’ . . . )

Makes it strange for me.  I’m sitting here debating thumb twiddling clockwise versus anticlockwise.  I’m waiting on responces from offices that are closed (or might be).  But, it’s insisted, I must wait.  Oh well, that’s life, isn’t it?

Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)

federal offices are open , banks are open .

I dont know of anything around here thats closed today .

I ordered some stuff from a supplier yesterday he said it would be in today I asked if they would be closed he sounded real puzzled and said "why would we close on friday ? "

I dont know of anything around here thats closed today

That's part of it, it varies from region to region.

Up in Dallas, even the workaholics will wind up only putting in a half-day (if only because there's no one on the other end of the phone).  Or, at least it was like that 25-something years ago.

We've not had any raindays this month at all, so most folks are a bit "ahead" versus weather.  With the schools all closed, somebody has to be home with them, so that "sweeps" through the labor force as well.

It's a horribly nice day outside today, too (not that I can see it from my windowless cave here--which may be better for me <g>).Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)

It was nice over here too...I was off from my day job, teaching, but had to make it up by working last night and today. Had some stuff that had to be done. Two or three years ago I had to work on Thanksgiving. More years ago than I care to think about, I worked on Christmas day. On the way in, I heard that 2 or 3 winos burned up in a hotel. Guess I didn't have it as bad as I thought at the time.

We got a paid holiday today. Blew my mind when the boss informed us on Monday. He got a big thank you then will get another on Monday after the break.

The guys framing a house across the street from where I'm framing one are working today. And my fiancee, a teacher, is also working.

    Working.

Not working would make it a Great Friday.

      Well said. Gotta work though.

A list of fedaral reserve or bank holidays from Wells Fargo website:

    New Year's day
    Martin Luther King Jr.'s B-Day
    Washington's Birthday
    Memorial Day
    Independance Day
    Labor Day
    Columbus Day
    Veteran's Day
    Thanksgiving Day
    Christmas Day

I think most schools have off Good Friday so it kinda throws people off a little. Reality is, I think most businesses are open.

Well, it seems like about half the banks are open--I'll be finding out if the Credit Union is open here at lunch.

We just got pictures from a project in Dallas--only the painter was on site, and he left after a couple of hours of prep work.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)

I usually do work on Good Friday, as well as a lot of other holidays.

But I completed a job earlier this week, and I've got to get my van cleaned up and ready to drive to Myrtle Beach on Monday.

    So nope, not working today.

Or at least, not making any money today.

I've basically had this whole week off.  Waiting on permits for a rehab.  I've cleared my schedule and I anticipate having at least another two weeks of "vacation."

My better half left me a list of chores though.  So I'll be working today if I can ever get off my lazy azz and get going today.

9 hours at the regular job, and probably 2-6 at the 'night' job (project house), so I guess to answer your question, "yes".

Although I liked the response about having off would be a 'great Friday', but my general feeling is that I can tolerate Fridays a lot easier than Mondays, so give me Monday off.

But in this case I have neither.

My place of employment is open (library) but I'm not scheduled. I do work Sunday, but the choice was up to me.

      employment is open (library)

Both of our municipal libraries are shut for the three days.  The big University library is running its "normal" schedule for the w/e (just on 1/4 staff); the smaller U's library is also on its normal w/e schedule (which is closed).

I called around the places I did not drive by during lunch.  One PM, one CM, working (both only until 1300); a couple of painting crews workign the whole day, the one drywall/framing crew working today was only going until lunch (there's a bike rally in Carlos, so there's not that many 'available' framers in any event <g> . . . )Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)

      1. Theodora | Apr 14, 2006 09:57pm | #19

At my library, our being open was contingent on enough staff being willing to come in. I need the money, and I almost always work Sundays, so no problem for me.

For some reason I can't fathom, the truss company I work for is closed on Good Friday. Our customers aren't happy, since they are all working and we're behind.I spent the day on a hot, dusty tractor. It has a nice cab, with lotsa glass. But no AC. Since it was about 90° and sunny today, I was a filthy, dirty mess. But we got a lot done, nothing broke, and nobody got hurt. So not a bad day all in all. More of the same tomorrow.
Live long, love much, and go to tractor pulls often

not so much religous based ...

but I gave myself today off.

as soon as I knew my buddy's band would be playing last nite ... and ...

the wife and kid are in Fla visiting GrandPa.

so ... slept in ... woke up with a bit of a fuzzy head.

    Plan worked to perfection.

also not holiday related ... different buddy's band(s) tonight ... and tomorrow nite.

    same plan.

I worked a half day.  Heading up to camp tonight for the opening day of Trout season tomorrow, so I had a bunch of running around to do this PM.

I found out that my bank is closed today.  Thank Providence for ATM machines.

See, I work in a factory, and they are closed today, but I'm just a temp, Good Friday is not a holiday for the temp company, so I get an unpaid holiday.  Slept in, went out and got a buzz cut, now I'm on breaktime.

Yup.  Put in 10.5 today, just got home.  Got stuff I could be doing tomorrow but I really need to get cranking on the trim at my own house so that's probably how I'll spend my Saturday.  But I did eat cheese pizza for lunch today (no meat).

      >>>>>>>>>>But I did eat cheese pizza for lunch today (no meat). I was trying to have a light day today. 11am I headed for my favorite fish place (Charlies - honestly the best fried fish I've ever had and an incredible bargain to boot). Had to circle the block twice to find a parking space - it was packed. Just as I got in line (this is carry out only), the copper truck driver called me and said he'd be at my place in 20 mins. I had to rush back across town and unload before I got my fish. Grabbed two pallets (2000 lbs+) with my forklift and was gonna set them thru the shop door when halfway in and halfway out, both pallets snapped and a ton of 10' copper sheets was noodeled over the forks. Couldn't move in or out. Had to hand unload all the sheets (108) one by one so I could get the shop door closed in time to take my daughter to piano lesson at 5. My reason for telling this whole story is: I never got lunch, but a pizza is on the way with every meat known to man on it. I think I even ordered possum. Hope nobody gets their hands around my food, 'cause they'll lose 'em.Why is it every time I need to get somewhere, I get waylaid by jackassery?

Worked till about 10:30 am.  Figured it would take all of Wed, Thurs, & Fri to rock the house I'm remodeling.  So when we got done in just over two days, said what the heck & took the rest of the day off.

we worked and I'll probably put in a few hours on Easter, Not because It's not a holiday for me or because I don't believe, just swamped and after mass et al.  It'll be just another day I can catch up with the added bonus, the phone will not ring, customers will not have problems etc.
